The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) are responsible for ensuring that the 1981 Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations are upheld. To assist individuals and workplaces in meeting the regulations, the HSE provide minimum first aid recommendations.
In the event that the recommendations are not met by individuals or workplaces, the HSE may find cause to prosecute and commence legal proceedings.
The number of first aiders that the HSE recommend are as follows:
LOW RISK (Offices etc.)
- 0-50: 1 x Appointed person
- 51-100: 1 x First Aid at Work
- 101+ : 1 x FAW per 100
MEDIUM RISK (Light assembly etc.)
- 0-20: 1 x Appointed person
- 21-100: 1 x FAW per 50
- 100+ : 1 x FAW per 100
HIGH RISK (Industrial etc.)
- 0-5: 1 x Appointed person
- 5-50: 1 x First AId at Work
- 50+ : 1 x FAW per 50
